Hace un año, Alejandro Romero quedó cautivado con la imagen de un niño enfrentándose a un toro. Se trataba de “Rafita” Mirabal, un chico conocido en el ámbito taurino nacional e internacional como el niño torero que cuenta con mayor número de actuaciones en todo México. El oriundo de Aguascalientes comenzó a mostrar su afición por la fiesta taurina desde muy temprana edad. En su casa creció entre videos, libros, dibujos y revistas de este tipo. Es por eso que “Rafita” comenzó a torerar a los seis años, formando parte del proyecto “Fiesta Futura” creado por el promotor taurino José San Martín. Su arrojo, valentía, y ganas de trascender lo han llevado a tener éxito así como accidentes. Sin embargo, el niño no ha interrumpido su educación primaria; condición que le puso su familia para apoyarlo.


La idea de hacer un documental a partir de una imagen, no es nueva. Sin embargo, el interés en Rafita Mirabal, como objeto de estudio, se trasmitirá cuando Alejandro Romero lo siga silenciosamente, sin ser intrusivo, hacer preguntas o manipular las situaciones. Este proyecto no sigue la línea de un reportaje televisivo, pues no se harán ningún tipo de entrevistas y tampoco se utilizará material de archivo. Por otro lado no hay una hipótesis que probar. Esta, es una exploración muy personal basada en una imagen que le atrajo a Romero.


En este documental, se mostrarán momentos de la vida cotidiana de Rafita por medio de secuencias espontáneas y naturales. El estilo narrativo a utilizar es sencillo. Al director le gustan las historias simples que surgen de una imagen o de la juxtaposción de varias imágenes. Disfruta de las películas en las cuales la historia se da a entender aunque se le apague al audio. Aprecia la poesía fotográfica que se crea al fijar la cámara en una toma por varios minutos y le inquietan los viajes visuales que emprende a través de los filmes que muestran el entorno como parte de la esencia de la historia. Todas estas cualidades narrativas, las quiere conjugar para traer a la pantalla esta experiencia visual.

A year ago, director Alejandro Romero was captivated by a photograph of a boy facing off against a bull in the center of a crowded stadium. That boy was "Rafita" Mirabal, known in Mexican and international bullfighting scenes for having performed more times in Mexico than any other bullfighter his age. A native of Aguascalientes, Rafita began to show his interest in the bullfighting tradition at a very early age. In his house, he grew up among countless videos, books, artworks and magazines all about bullfighting. It’s no wonder then that Rafita began to bullfight when he was six years old, as part of the project "Future Celebration" created by the bullfighting promoter Jose San Martín. Rafita’s courage, ambition, and love for the sport have elevated him to success, despite having suffered several accidents over the years. And amazingly, he has never interrupted his primary education, as this was a condition that his family has stood firmly by in order to support him.

The spark for many documentaries has begun with a photograph and, in this case too, Romero could not shake the image of Rafita Mirabal from his mind, Romero decided to follow Rafita quietly, without being intrusive, or asking questions or manipulating situations. This approach to documentary film-making has always interested Romero as opposed to that typical of a TV broadcast piece, full of interviews and stock footage.

Nor does the director have a thesis to argue. This is a very personal exploration of an image that fascinated him. In this documentary, the director will show moments of Rafita’s daily life by means of spontaneous and natural sequences. The narrative style that he chooses to use is simple. Romero likes simple stories that arise from an image or the juxtaposition of several images. He enjoys films in which the you can still understand the story even if there’s no audio. He loves the photographic poetry that is created when the camera is steady for several minutes, creating a real visual trip. He favors techniques that show surroundings as part of the essence of the story and wants to combine these elements and narrative qualities, to bring a visual experience to the screen.
